Glass is a magical material, lending itself perfectly to self-expression. The fluidity of hot glass allows for dynamic creation, where timing is everything. This process is by necessity a relatively swift one.
By contrast the resistant and unyielding nature of cold glass makes it a different material in its own right. The meticulous and methodical carving and sculpting process is a much slower business altogether, at times becoming a love-hate affair of dynamic proportions!
Starting at Dartington Crystal at age 16, I learnt the basic skills and techniques of cold working, but after 18 years of production work I yearned for something more creative.
After Dartington, I worked mainly for other artists. In 2004 I opened my own independent workshop In Frome giving me time and freedom to experiment and stretch the boundaries of what is possible. I soon started to develop my own work, and the most significant result was the Carved range you see here.
My work concentrates on forms with natural symmetry and hidden depth. Nature produces countless examples of balance and harmony in form, while not being geometrically perfect. The subtle differences are mesmerising, and are reflected in the carved pieces, inspired by the beauty, sensuality and fertility of the human form.
Working with other artists, has greatly inspired me to develop my own work, and while I have worked with many truly wonderful people, none have impacted on me more than Menno Jonker. Menno pushed my abilities with the complexity of his work, and helped to take my love of sculpting glass to new levels. I hope this love is reflected in the "Carved" series.
